The word of the day is Cruciverbalist

A Cruciverbalist is someone who solves or collects crossword puzzles.

Naturally.

A workforce of home based employees is a boon to many companies. Home based employees cost significantly less than their inhouse counterparts, and have the potential for significantly higher productivity. So why aren’t employers beating down your door?

I think the reasons can be broken down into the following:

Practical- We are not yet ready for a virtual pharmacist, a virtual cable technician, or a virtual sanitation worker. Though the future may hold a point where those jobs are computer automated and directed by a human brain sitting in front a terminal far away from the jobsite, we’re not there yet.

Quality Control- If you’re being paid by the hour, and your employer can’t see you, they need another standard by which to measure your productivity. In a call center environment, this is pretty well served by monitoring the quality, length, and frequency of calls handled. The reality is that working at home is best served by results oriented compensation. The bottom line is, if your employer has no way to determine that you’re doing the job to their standards, they will not hire you.

Retention- Any business owner who has hired from the at-home workforce will tell you that people just don’t take their job commitments as seriously, on the whole. Are there exceptions? Sure. But by and large, people who are hired to work from home have a much greater tendency to ‘disappear’ from their duties without any kind of communication whatsoever. That is probably not truly a reflection of the attitude of the average at-home worker; rather, the at-home worker is far more likely to learn ‘on the job’ that the position ‘is not for them’.

The single best way to create more legitimate at-home work opportunities is to make the at-home workforce the single most attractive option for as many jobs as is feasible. How do we do that? Let’s hear it from the salespeople among you— we minimize the risk.

We must have a standard of values that answers the concerns of employers. Quite simply, if you wouldn’t do it in a real office, don’t do it in your virtual office. If you wouldn’t say it in a meeting, don’t write it in an email. If you must quit, give two weeks notice. If that is completely impossible, than submit a resignation letter. In short, conduct yourself as though your at-home job was any other job.

I will be writing more on this subject. Stay tuned, and please share your thoughts! Post here, and in the forums. Be Well!
